CBD and the Coronavirus: What the Scientists are Saying

When I was first assigned to blog with the Arrow Organics CBD company, I figured it would be difficult to resist the urge to write about the deadly plague upending lives, careers, and psyches across the globe. Well, the Chicago Tribune, Forbes.com, and other large media outlets who have reported on scientists’ calls to explore CBD as an effective treatment for Covid-19 are making this connection too difficult to ignore.

Scientists from both the Texas Biomedical Research Institute and the University of Nebraska first mentioned the promise of the immunosuppressive drug tocilizumab which one study showed to help 90% of the 21 sampled Covid patients experiencing inflammation in the lungs.

However, this drug isn’t without its shortcomings. “Although promising, it has also produced adverse effects like pancreatitis and hypertriglyceridemia (Morrison et al., 2020), which make it imperative to explore effective alternative anti-inflammatory strategies.”

So where does CBD come in? Well the “anti-inflammatory strategies” these researchers are recommending the medical community take a look at are cannabidiols due to its relatively low risk even when administered in high dosages. “[CBD] has shown beneficial anti-inflammatory effects in pre-clinical models of various chronic inflammatory diseases,” they write in their abstract.

In the body of their research, it is amazing to read how much of their logic relies on data that shows how versatile CBD can be. They point to one study that shows “CBD decreased lung inflammation in a murine model of acute lung injury,” and another that showed CBD reduced proinflammatory cytokine production, airway inflammation and fibrosis for chronic asthma patients (Vuolo et al., 2019).”

Additionally, the researchers not only suggest trials exploring the potential benefit CBD can have on the virus, but also the anxiety many are experiencing as result of it. “The many uncertainties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic such as status of the economy, employment and loss of connection can fuel depression, fear and anxiety. CBD has shown promise as an alternative therapy for the clinical management of anxiety disorders (Nichols and Kaplan, 2020),” they say.

While it is encouraging to see the medical community come around to CBD as a potential treatment for something as serious as this virus, we are obliged to remind you that we do not sell magic cure alls. We know you love and trust us, but it’s silly to take medical advice from your favorite CBD company. Please keep 6 feet of distance, wear a mask, and don’t berate the employees at Trader Joes!
