Can CBD Help Public Speaking Anxiety?

Lately, I’ve been pondering the theory that there may be a silent portion of millions of introverts who have been absolutely thriving through times of quarantine and widespread facial coverings. Unfortunately for those people, I could also theorize that it’s pretty clear that the vast majority of us seek a return to normalcy. Yes, that means crowded bars, concerts, and sporting events, but also company board meetings, lectures, and school powerpoint presentations.

You don’t need to be an introvert to hate public speaking. Polls have shown that anywhere from 45 to 73 % of people are petrified to give a public presentation. So if you’re indeed one of those people, fear not, scientists think they may have found a way to help you out.

A plethora of Brazilian scientists found encouraging evidence of the benefits of CBD from a placebo controlled study on subjects with Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder. They write “Pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, and significantly decreased alert in their anticipatory speech.”

Comparatively, the placebo group did not fare so well. “The placebo group presented higher anxiety, cognitive impairment, discomfort, and alert levels when compared with the control group as assessed with the Visual Analogue Mood Scale.”

While the findings above are subjective observations made by researchers who were critically analyzing the subjects, what the subjects themselves reported back to the researchers were also very encouraging. They write about this phenomenon saying “Another important observation of this study was that the increase of negative self-evaluation during public speaking was almost abolished by CBD.”

On this front, researchers concluded that positive self reporting by those with SAD who took CBD before public speaking could help inform the future of therapy and treatment to those with SAD since one of the most important combatants to SAD and fear of public speaking is confidence.

While the United States reels from anxiety that is induced by too much public speaking (respiratory droplets), now may be good time for Americans to grapple with alternative treatments that scientists believe can be revolutionary in combating it.
